X-RAY TRANSITION AND CHERENKOV RADIATION PRODUCED BY HIGH-ENERGY PARTICLES IN MULTILAYERS AND THEIR APPLICATIONS

A new formula for radiation produced in semitransparent stacks of two alternating thin layers with different dielectric constants epsilon(1,2) less as well as greater than 1 is given. When epsilon(1,2) < 1 it coincides with the well known formula for the X-ray transition radiation, while in the frequency region of anomalous dispersion where one can have epsilon(1,2) > 1 it provides the properties of the so called X-ray Cherenkov radiation produced in multilayers. The obtained numerical results are used for comparison with the results obtained with the help of other formulae as well as for discussing new experiments.
