Deposition Methods, Properties and Metal Cutting Applications of Ceramic Films

This chapter presents an overview of the various methods for the deposition of ceramic coatings for cutting tools. Important physical and mechanical properties of these thin films in relation to their applications are reviewed. Theoretical modelling and experimental research work in characterizing the physical and mechanical properties of the coatings are cited and discussed. Various metal working applications of ceramic-coated tools in turning, milling, drilling, and other processes are also reviewed and future trends and development needs addressed.
