QoS Provision and Mobility Management in MIND Access Networks and Ad Hoc Extensions

One of the aims of the IST BRAIN was to build and evaluate a wireless IP access network that can simultaneously support mobile users and provide QoS for real time multimedia applications. The IST MIND project extends the BRAIN network by adding support for ad hoc access. This paper first describes the QoS and mobility management concepts developed in BRAIN, and describes the hardware infrastructure that has been built in order to evaluate the operation and performance of its architecture and protocols. The second part of the paper considers the issues affecting QoS provisioning when ad hoc networks are used to provide connectivity to the Internet, identifying and studying the missing elements in current QoS architectures.
