Nationwide Surveillance of Doripenem Susceptibility among Clinical Isolates in Intensive Care Units in Taiwan: SMART Program 2004 Data

Background: To survey in vitro susceptibilities of doripenem and other three carbapenems against clinically important isolates from patients hospitalized in intensive care units. Methods: A total of 1311 isolates were studied. MICs were determined by the agar dilution method (CLSI). Conclusions: In comparison with other carbapenems, doripenem exhibited better in vitro activity than imipenem and similar in vitro activity to meropenem against the Enterobacteriaceae. It also showed better in vitro activity than meropenem and imipenem against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The activity of doripenem was similar to imipenem against Acinetobacter baumannii and better than that of meropenem.
