Abscess Formation in Rathke’s Cleft Cyst

We report about a patient, 68 year old man, who was admitted to our Hospital with endocrine dysfunction and meningitis. Computed tomography and brain magnetic resonance imaging showed a sellar mass with ring enhancement. Parenteral antibiotics theraphy was started and transsphenoidal drainage of a pituitary abscess was performed. The post-operative histological examination revealed epithelial cells characteristic of Rathke's cleft cyst. The preoperative diagnosis has been based on the clinical symptoms and on the neuroradiological images.
