DISTRIBUCIÓN DE AVES MARINAS EN LA COSTA PATAGÓNICA ARGENTINA

A census of marine birds was conducted off the Patagonian coast of Argentina from 27-29 November 1996, on board an icebreaker. On the basis of 95 observiation periods of 10 minutes each, a total of 18 species and 2063 individual birds were recorded. Large concentrations of birds were observed between 42°-43°S and 47°-48°S, where six species (Magellanic Penguin Spheniscus magellanicus, Black- browed Albatross Diomedea melanophris, White-chinned Petrel Procellaria aequinoctialis, Manx Shearwater Puffi- nus puffinus, Great Shearwater P. gravis, and Prions Pachyptila sp.) accounted for 84% of total density. It was confirmed that bird concentrations, though variable in species composition, appear to remain relatively constant with latitude throughout the year. Resumen. Se realizaron censos de aves marinas del 27 al 29 de noviembre de 1996 a bordo de un rompehie- los en la costa patagónica argentina. Fueron registradas 18 especies y 2063 individuos en 95 períodos de observación de 10 min cada uno. Se encontraron grandes concentraciones de aves entre los 42°-43ºS y 47°-48ºS, en donde seis especies (Pingüino de Magallanes Spheniscus magellanicus, Albatros de Ceja Negra Diomedea melanophris, Petrel Egro Procellaria aequinoctialis, Petrel Boreal Puffinus puffinus, Petrel Cabeza Negra Puffinus gravis y priones Pachyptila sp.) reunieron el 84% de la densidad total obtenida. A lo largo del año, las concentraciones de aves se mantienen más o menos constantes en latitud, pero las especies cambian. Acep- tado el 14 de Febrero de 1998.
