Abstract
The effect of silane coupling agent KH-550 as a compatibilizer in polypropylene (PP)/phosphate ester dibromoneopentyl glycol acid (PEA) composites was studied. A recipe of PP/PEA/KH-550= 90/10/0. 5 was found to be the optimal. Compared with neat PP/PEA composites, the tensile strength and impact strength were improved by 34.2 % and 7.0 %, respectively. SEM showed the adhesion between PEA and PP was enhanced by KH-550. POM showed that the size of the spherulites of PP and the dispersed PEA particles became more uniform with the inclusion of KH-550. Flow tests showed that the apparent viscosity decreased by adding PEA. But when 0.5 % KH-550 was added, the viscosity of the composites increased. The flame retardancy of the composites was also improved when KH-550 was added.
