Abstract
BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The importance of psychosocial factors on treatment outcomes is well known. Psychological distress has been shown to be a predictor for poor surgical outcomes with spinal surgery. The clinical characteristics of psychologically distressed patients presenting with spinal disorders is not fully understood. Improved knowledge of the unique clinical characteristics of psychologically distressed patients may help in providing appropriate treatment and improving outcomes.
