Abstract
The strongest limitation of the Heidelberg proton microprobe setup is the low brightness of its Penning ion source, resulting in less than 1 pA of beam current if a spot of 1 mu m(2) is focused. To test different ion sources a new device for brightness measurements was built and attached to the ion source test bench of the institute. So far, the brightness of three types of ion sources has been tested for proton beams, a microwave type, a Penning source and two different radio frequency (RF) sources. The setup of the device is presented and the new results are discussed. (C) 2000 Published by Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
