Practice and Effect of Assessing Comprehensive Clinical Skills of New Nurses before Their Independent Duty

Abstract
Objective To explore the assessment model for the overall clinical skills of new nurses before their independent duty.Methods The 148 new nurses in our hospital received the clinical skills assessment from 2009 to 2011 before they were on duty independently.The sills included learning the works of nursing staffs,knowing the doctor’s advice and its executive method well,making certain the arrangement,use and management of first aid items,usage of common emergency medicines,management system for emergency ambulance,preparation and management of a skin test antigen,coordination and nursing care in rescuing critical patients,writing of nursing documents,et al.And the evaluation of new nurses on the model was investigated.Results The nurses had a 91.89% pass rate in the clinical skills assessment.The average score for the arrangement,use and management of first aid items was 83.6%.84.46% of new nurses agreed with the evaluation contents.All of them agree that this model can be used in all new nurses.Conclusion The system training and comprehensive skills assessment of new nurses before their independent duty can objectively reflect their overall clinical skills,and find the existing problems,and provides a beneficial reference for the future work.
