Polysilahydrocarbon Synthetic Fluids .2. Synthesis And Characterization Of Tetrasilahydrocarbons

A new class of silahydrocarbons of the general formula RSi(CH2CH2CH2SiR'3)3 was obtained by reaction of C8H17Si[(CH2)3SiCl3]3 intermediate with alkyl organometallics. By varying the alkyl groups from C1 to C-12, a series of fluids with viscosities ranging from 10.5 to 105 cSt at 40-degrees-C and from 2.82 to 17.5 cSt at 100-degrees-C was prepared. This approach permits the development of fluids tailored for applications where rigid requirements of temperature/viscosity/volatility must be met and which cannot be accomplished by the existing systems.
