Abstract
Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra are recorded at the L-2 and L-3 absorption edges of terbium in TbCo2 and TbF3. At both edges weak resonances, originating from 2p-->4f quadrupolar excitations, are observed. The difference between the ionic and the metallic compound manifests itself in the energy width and the energy position of the dipolar 2p-->5d excitation, while the energy position of the quadrupolar excitation remains unchanged.
