Abstract
Background and purpose:Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is the most aggressive and lethal form of lung cancer as well as one of the most chemotherapy and radiotherapy sensitive solid tumors. Multimodality treatment is the milestone of improving the prognosis of patients with SCLC. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze the prognostic factors for SCLC. Methods:From January 2004 to April 2005, 97 patients treated in Shanghai Chest Hospital were enrolled. The correlation between clinicopathological characteristics and prognostic factors were evaluated by univariate and multivariate analyses. Survival analysis was evaluated by Kaplan- Meier and Log-Rank test. Multivariate analysis was performed by Cox Stepwise Regression model. Results:In the whole group,1-,2-and 3-year survival rates were 60.82%,28.59% and 24.08% respectively, and median survival time (MST) was 16.03 months. According to univariate analysis, stage, performance status (PS),surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and the level of lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) were signifi cantly related to the survival. By multivariate analysis, surgery, PS, LDH and radiotherapy were independent prognostic factors. Conclusion:Surgery, PS, LDH and radiotherapy were independent prognostic factors for SCLC.
