摘要

•An improved groundwater model is developed using multipoint flux approximation.•The new model uses arbitrary shaped polygons to discretize aquifer systems.•The new model can represent groundwater flow processes well and outperforms conventional groundwater models in aquifers with complex-shaped boundaries.
