Abstract
Volatile anesthetics (VA) may protect the brain from ischemic injury by activating mitochondrial signalling pathways. The aim of the study was to test whether sevoflurane affects mitochondrial function in the central nervous system by altering the mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm). Sevoflurane 2 MAC reduced ΔΨm, reflecting a depolarization of the mitochondria. Blocking complex V of the respiratory chain enhanced the sevoflurane induced mitochondrial depolarization, causing reversed function of the ATP synthase at complex V in the electron transport chain.
