Abstract A comparison is made between the shape of the frequency spectrum of the galactic radio background and the energy spectrum of the cosmic ray electrons. A change of slope in the energy spectrum of the electrons moving in interstellar space has to be expected between 750 MeV and 3 GeV. The most probable origin of this change of slope seems to be searched for directly in the source of electrons of primary origin. Independently of the availability of absolute measurements of the galactic radio noise intensity and electron flux, a lower limit on the intensity of the general magnetic field, corresponding to B⩾4·5 10−6 G, can be set.
