By means of branched coverings tecbniques, we prove that the Heegaard genus and the regular genus of an orientable 3-manifold with boundary coincide. 1. PRELIMINARIES Titrougitout this paper the term "manifoid" wíll denote a compact, connected, orientable PL-rnanifold witit (possible empty) boundary.
