Microblogged Contributions to the Emergency Arena: Discovery, Interpretation and Implications

摘要
Computer-mediated communication (CMC) in emergency situations is a vast and unwieldy area of study that has recently caught the attention of the public as well as scholarly communities. In this paper, I explain my research on Twitter broadcasts during mass emergency events. I discuss preliminary empirical research and how it leads to theoretical understandings of these communications. This leads to the exploration of a working framework of categorizing such communications, which influences the development of natural language processing (NLP) tools to support "everyday analysts" faced with emergencies. I conclude with an explanation of future work and contributions to the field.
