Intestinal obstruction in patients with malignant gynaecological tumors

Intestinal obstruction in patients with malignant gynaecological tumours is a common complication. Bowel obstruction occurs as a result of complex pathophysiologic mechanisms and therapy (surgery and chemotherapy) and is associated with peritoneal carcinomatosis. The incidence is higher in patients with advanced gynaecological cancer. Due to heterogeneous patient populations and variability of causes, therapeutic strategies are not standardized; therefore, treatment of intestinal obstruction in these patients is often a surgical challenge.
