Long term stability in orthognathic surgery

Abstract
Out of 30 patients who at least underwent orthognathic surgery 10 years ago only six showed up for evaluation. The following records were taken including clinical pictures, both facial and occlusal views including static and functional occlusion. X-rays for cephalometrics analysis and centric relationship (CR) mounted models. Skeletal and dental stability was evaluated using cephalometric plane sella-nasion (SN) and mandibular plane as reference for upper/lower central incisors and first molars respectively. Also overjet, overbites and total anterior facial height (Na-Me) were compared using pre treatment, immediate post surgery and at least 10 years follow up. Clinical evaluation of functional occlusion was accomplished by shimstok checking and CR mounted models. Results showed good dental and skeletal stability with overbite and overjet being statistically significant stable. Due to the small sample size a Wilcoxon test was applied (P = 0.0005).
