Study on the Luminescence Properties of Rare Earth Ions in CaO-SiO_2-B_2O_3 Glasses Doped with Sm_2O_3,CeO_2 and Co-doped with Sm_2O_3 and CeO_2

The luminescence properties of glasses doped with Sm2O3,CeO2 and co-doped with Sm2O3 and CeO2 and their corresponding transitions were studied.Typical spectral properties of Sm3+ appear in the spectra of CaO-SiO2-B2O3 glasses doped with Sm2O3.Spectral properties of Ce3+ appear in the spectra of CaO-SiO2-B2O3 glasses doped with CeO2.When excited at 332nm,Ce3+ emits purple blue light.The emission spectrum of Ce3+ is a broad band,ranging from about 350nm to about 500nm,with its major peak at 393nm and a 61nm Stokes displacement.Only one luminescence center is formed in CaO-SiO2-B2O3 glasses doped with CeO2.When CaO-SiO2-B2O3 glasses are co-doped with Sm2O3 and CeO2,an emission peak of Ce4+ is observed and the luminescence intensity of the Sm3+ decreases.This indicates that when a matrix is introduced,Ce,as a new activator,increases the local symmetry of Sm3+,and the f→f transfer is weakened,which leads to the decrease of the luminescence intensity of the Sm3+.In the CaO-SiO2-B2O3 glasses co-doped with Sm2O3 and CeO2,Ce4+ and Sm3+ are linked by the bridge-oxygen bond.
