IMMUNOLOGIC mechanisms have an important surveillance role in detecting and destroying abnormal, potentially malignant cells arising either spontaneously or through the effect of various agents. The enhancing effect of various immunosuppressive measures on oncogenesis induced by various agents in laboratory animals and also the well known clinical association between immunologic deficiency syndromes and malignant processes, especially of the lymphoid system, are consistent with this hypothesis.
