W7-X is a fully optimised low-shear stellarator of the Wendelstein line. It follows the partially optimised W7-AS device which showed excellent operational characteristics at fusion relevant parameters. W7- X is optimised along the quasi-isodynamic principle. It is built with superconducting coils and ECRF heating and plasma exhaust are developed for 30 min operation. At present, the device is at the transition from component procurement to assembly. W7-X has a high ITER relevance and it represents an excellent training bed for European industry.
