Abstract
Cardiac ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a known risk factor for infective endocarditis. However, oocyte retrieval during fertility treatment is rarely known to cause such a complication. We describe a 31-year-old woman who presented with fever, chills, and fatigue for 3 weeks. Her medical history revealed congenital VSD and fertility treatments for an in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer, the last one having taken place 6 weeks prior to the current admission. A diagnosis of endocarditis was made on the basis of transthoracic echocardiography (TTE), transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE), and positive blood cultures for Streptoccocus viridians.
