Abstract
Abdominal obesity plays a primary role in occurrence of metabolic syndrome and contributes to the occurrence of insulin resistance, and insulin resistance leads to development of diabetes, hypertension and dislipidemia. The aim of the study was to establish the incidence of particular metabolic syndrome elements in persons with abdominal obesity, as well as the influence of metabolic syndrome to occurrence of fatal cardiovascular events in the following ten years. The examinees were included in the examination by method of random choice and, on the basis of the presence of abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome, they were divided in three groups. The results showed that the incidence of metabolic syndrome in persons with abdominal obesity was very high (66.96%), and high risk for occurrence of cardiovascular events was significantly more present in persons with metabolic syndrome. The most present metabolic syndrome elements were hypertension (90.67%), then hypertriglyceridemia (78.67%), diabetes mellitus type 2 (60%) and lowered values of HDL cholesterol (52%). The metabolic syndrome treatment should commence as early as possible, prior to development of cardio-vascular disease.
