Abstract
THE nephrotic syndrome, a clinical entity characterized by edema, proteinuria, hypoalbuminemia and hypercholesterolemia, may occur in the adult during the course of either a primary renal disease or a systemic disease involving the kidney. In the former group the nephrotic syndrome often appears as part of the natural course of proliferative glomerulonephritis. However, a significant number of adults without clinical or pathological evidence of glomerulonephritis may present a nephrotic syndrome.
