Abstract
ANSI X3.9-1978 FORTRAN is not convenient for use in various application areas. Examples of such application areas include numerical analysis, industrial control, and computer graphics. A means is required to permit application- oriented extensions of FORTRAN by users with special application requirements that does not burden all users. Such a means is not presently available without changes to FORTRAN itself. This position states the nature of the changes required to FORTRAN. It then suggests constraints to be observed by all application-oriented extension modules.
