Daniel Zicha

My entire professional career has been spent in the development and application of advanced light microscopy methods and image processing of special relevance to cell biology and cancer research. My first author Science paper on a novel technique of FLAP (Zicha, et al. Science 300 142-5, 2003), leading to a discovery of active transport of monomeric actin into protrusions of metastatic cancer cells, has acquired 126 citations to date. In total, I have published 72 peer-reviewed research papers. I have a record of inter disciplinary projects; examples include my first author paper on TGF-beta and dry-mass profiling (Zicha, et al. J Cell Sci 112 447 54, 1999), my co author J Cell Biol paper on talin and dry-mass profiling (Priddle, et al. J Cell Biol 142 1121-33, 1998), my last-author paper on therapeutic effect of βGBP cytokine in colon cancer cells (Mallucci, et al. Mol Cancer Ther 11, 1884-93, 2012) and my discovery of a novel metastasis suppressor (Cavanna, et al. J Cell Sci 120 606-16, 2007). My co author paper elucidating the role of Cdc42 in macrophage chemotaxis acquired 426 citations (Allen, et. al. J Cell Biol 141 1147-57, 1998). I have presented over 40 invited lectures at international meetings, co-authored 4 invited reviews and 7 book chapters on microscopy techniques and their applications, and I have refereed numerous manuscripts for a range of journals including Science, Journal of Cell Science and Journal of Microscopy. Over 17 years of work as head of Light Microscopy core facility at Imperial Cancer Research Fund (ICRF), Cancer Research UK London Research Institute (CRUK LRI) and The Francis Crick Institute, Lincoln's Inn Fields Laboratory (Crick LIF) has given me extensive experience with leading a team of 7 people, development of microscopy techniques and biological research. The laboratories were centrally funded and this is why I only had limited number of grants. Also core facilities had limited numbers of students and postdoctoral fellows and independent research was eventually suppressed. After my start at CEITEC BUT, I have been successful with a grant application from European Structural and Investment Funds.
