Bio
I am broadly interested in all areas of public health and nutrition, but especially in the relationship between diet and nutritional status. One emphasis is the exploration of the relationship of diet to non-communicable disease development. The excellence of my work around nutrition and health, has been recognised through my research outputs in top-ranked journals, the award of significant research grants, and peer recognition from within my discipline. In particular, I have been named in the recent released August 2021 data-update of the World’s Top 2% Scientists List (Top 2% of the most-cited scientists in the world) based on single-year impact by the Stanford University) and this recognition has placed me in the global map of excellence in public health and nutrition research. My work contributes particularly towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) no. 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), and 3 (Good Health and Well-Being). In addition, my varied background with experience in public health and medical science allows me to tackle research problems with a multi-disciplined approach.
Born and raised in Malaysia, I gained my BSc (Hons) from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, MSc (MedSci) in Human Nutrition (Public Health Nutrition) from the University of Glasgow and PhD in Human Nutrition from the University of Otago. I completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Medical Science (Epidemiology and Biostatistics) in the section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Universiti Sains Malaysia. I also obtained a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) in Teaching and Supporting Learning in Higher Education (with Merit) from the University of Liverpool.
I have gained extensive teaching, leadership and management expertise and experience through my previous roles as the Programme Director of the Bachelor of Science in Public Health, a member of the Departmental Executive Committee, Departmental E-Learning Coordinator, a PhD supervisor (primary and co-supervisor), a member of Working Group Committee for the implementation of the University’s Technology-Enhanced Learning Framework, a founding member and Group Leader of the Health and Sustainability Innovation (HSI) Lab of the Health Technologies University Research Centre at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (an international joint venture university founded by the University of Liverpool in the UK and Xi’an Jiaotong University in China).
I began my academic career at the University of Otago in New Zealand and went on to positions at Universiti Sains Malaysia in Malaysia and Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in China, before taking up my current role at the University of the West England, Bristol in 2022.
