Gen. dyw. prof. dr hab. inż. Zygmunt Mierczyk jest absolwentem Wojskowej Akademii Technicznej kierunku Fizyka Techniczna. Po rocznej praktyce dowódczej w 1983 roku rozpoczął pracę naukowo-dydaktyczną w WAT, początkowo jako inżynier, następnie jako asystent, adiunkt, kierownik Zakładu Techniki Laserowej, komendant Instytutu Optoelektroniki, komendant Wydziału Techniki Wojskowej, zastępca komendanta-rektora WAT. W latach 2008-2016 był rektorem-komendantem WAT. Od 2017 roku jest dyrektorem Centrum Inżynierii Biomedycznej IOE WAT. Jest profesorem nauk technicznych, specjalistą w zakresie systemów uzbrojenia, w tym techniki laserowej i optoelektroniki. Prowadzi prace naukowo-badawcze i wdrożeniowe w obszarze inżynierii materiałowej, konstrukcji i technologii laserów oraz elementów i zespołów optoelektronicznych stosowanych w systemach wojskowej techniki laserowej, a także w urządzeniach dla przemysłu, medycyny i ochrony środowiska. Od 2005 roku kieruje pracami sekretariatu Polskiej Platformy Technologicznej Systemów Bezpieczeństwa. W latach 2014-2018 był przewodniczącym Rady Naukowo-Przemysłowej przy Sekretarzu Stanu w MON. Jest laureatem wielu nagród i wyróżnień wojskowych i cywilnych, w tym 35 medali na Światowych Wystawach Wynalazków i Innowacji (Bruksela, Genewa, Londyn, Moskwa, Norymberga, Osaka, Pekin, Pittsburg, Seul). Dorobek naukowo-badawczy obejmuje 8 monografii, ponad 240 publikacji naukowych oraz ponad 400 referatów i komunikatów konferencyjnych. Jest współautorem 14 patentów i ponad 40 wdrożonych technologii i urządzeń optoelektronicznych. Jest doktorem honoris causa Politechniki Śląskiej i Honorowym Profesorem Politechniki Wrocławskiej.

Major General (ret.) Professor Zygmunt Mierczyk, PhD, DSc is a graduate of the Military University of Technology (MUT) in Warsaw, Poland, in the field of Applied Physics. He completed a year's practice as a military commander in 1983 before commencing a teaching-research career at MUT. Upon completing a MSc in Engineering, he quickly rose the academic ranks, progressing from a Teaching Assistant to Assistant Professor and the Head of Laser Technologies Division. After which, he was appointed the Head of Institute of Optoelectronics (IOE) and then the Chief of Military Technology Faculty and Vice-Rector-Commandant at MUT. His academic career at MUT culminated in his appointment as Rector-Commandant in 2008, an office he held with distinction until 2016. Since 2017, Prof. Z. Mierczyk has been Director of Biomedical Engineering Center IOE.
Prof. Mierczyk is a professor of technical sciences, specialising in the area of weapons systems, including optoelectronics and laser technologies. He has steered a myriad of scientific-research projects to implementation in materials engineering, design and construction of laser technology as well as optoelectronic systems used in military laser technology and applications for industry, medicine and environmental protection. Since 2005, Prof. Z. Mierczyk has been managing and supervising the works of the Polish Technology Platform for Security Systems. From 2014 to 2018, he chaired the Science and Industry Council under the Office of Secretary of State in the Ministry of National Defence.
He has been the recipient of numerous prizes and awards, both in military and civilian spheres, including 35 medals of distinction awarded to him at the International Exhibition of Inventions and Innovations (Brussels, Geneva, Osaka, London, Moscow, Beijing, Nuremberg, Pittsburgh and Soul). His scientific and research accomplishments comprise 8 monographic works, over 240 scientific articles and over 400 public lectures at scientific conferences. He has contributed to 14 patents and the implementation of over 40 optoelectronic technologies and devices. He has been awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa title by the Silesian University of Technology as well as the title of Honorary Professor from the Wrocław University of Technology.
