I have been curious and enthusiastic to the life phenomenon and its underlying mechanism since I was a small child. I firmly chose biological science in undergraduate study and started cancer research since my master study because of two reasons: 1, cancer cell is the cell with the highest plasticity, and it is a good tool to study the underlying molecular mechanism of “life” in cellular level. 2 More and more people are diagnosed with cancer and it become a major threat to human health.
My research goal is to help improve the cancer diagnosis to prevent cancer, and to help provide more effective mechanism based clinical treatment strategy through fundamental cancer research.
During the cancer progression, It may take several years or even several tens of years for the patients from the tumor initiation developed to lethal metastasis. There are a lot of molecular level symptoms indicating cancer progression. So far, many patients are diagnosed with cancer at stage IV (metastatic) when most treatment methods become inoperable or ineffective, mainly because of the lack of effective ways of early diagnosis. Unfortunately, a very limited number of molecular biomarkers are available that have both good specificity and sensitivity for cancer diagnosis. One of my first research interest is to do the research and identify new diagnostic markers in order to increase the effectiveness and accuracy of cancer diagnosis to prevent cancer.
Immunotherapy has revolutionized cancer treatment method in the last decades, however, there is a significant subset of cancer patients cannot benefit from it because of either de novo or acquired resistance to immune checkpoint inhibition or other immunotherapeutic modalities. Another of my interest is to find out new mechanism-based treatment method to sensitize cancer to immunotherapy.
