My research interests span from biomolecular engineering to biophysics with a focus on protein phase behavior and functional biomaterials by exploiting a set of soft matter approaches and microfluidic techniques. The two main area our lab is focus on are:
Protein phase behavior
Protein misfolding is found to be associated with many neurodegenerative disorders, such are amyloid fibrils in Alzheimer’s disease. It was found that aberrant phase transition can lead to protein pathological aggregation resulting cell malfunction. My future projects will focus on fundamental studies of the kinetics and dynamics of protein phase behavior.
Biomaterials
Biomaterials generated from natural components, such as proteins, have attracted much attention for their remarkable biocompatibility and sustainability. A new class of new bio-materials will be developed based on protein derived hierarchical structures from nanofibrils, to phase separated droplets to macroscale fibres for applications in food, cosmetic industries and bioplastic.
The aim of my research is to improve human lives from a health, environment and foods perspective. I will use sustainable strategies by performing fundamental studies on proteins for the study of protein pathological aggregation and development of biodegradable materials and innovative techniques.
