Bio
Yao-Joe Joseph Yang (SM’18) received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from National Taiwan University (NTU), Taipei, Taiwan, in 1990, the M.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA, USA, in 1995, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, USA, in 1997 and 1999, respectively.
He was with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NTU. He was a Senior Application Engineer with Coventor, Inc., Cambridge, MA, USA. Since 2017, he has been the Director General of the Taiwan Instrument Research Institute, National Applied Research Laboratories, Hsinchu, Taiwan. He is currently a Full Professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering, NTU, and holds the NTU Distinguished Professorship. His current research interests include microelectromechanical systems, nanotechnology, high-precision micromachining, flexible sensing arrays, sensor network, parallel processing, semiconductor devices, and vacuum microelectronics modeling.
Dr. Yang was a recipient of the Outstanding Research Award, Dr. Da-Yu Wu Memorial Award (Outstanding Young Researcher Award) of the National Science Council, and the NTU Outstanding Researcher Award. He serves as the Chairman of the Taipei Chapter of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society and the ASME Taiwan Section. He also serves as the Board Director of the Chinese Institute of Automation Engineering and the Chinese Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has consulted more than three U.S.-based companies and four Taiwan-based organizations. He served as the Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering, NTU, from 2011 to 2017 (re-elected in 2014).
