Career Trajectory
Bio
My entire career has been focused on the development of imaginative an innovative sensing solution, i.e. transducers, sensors and biosensors to detect and/or to monitor parameters of relevance in clinical diagnostics, environmental monitoring or food analysis. My main skills are, therefore, on areas such as microelectronics, photonics, electrochemistry or microfluidics for the production of the devices, but also in microbiology, infectious diseases, microvasculature or neuroscience, the main application fields of the previous technologies.
- One of my main scientific contributions is in the field of microbiology, where I developed many solutions for bacterial detection. I was pioneer on the use of impedance spectroscopy for the detection of bacterial biofilms and bacteriophages using microelectronic devices. Such instruments were patented and licensed by a Spanish company. Now, I have developed original strategies based on electrochromic molecules to detect the presence of living organisms on different types of surfaces, from glass to hospital fabrics. Also, we have recently developed a sepsis kit test based on the previous concept, which capable to detect a single microorganism directly on blood samples. This technology has also been recently been patented.
- A second important contribution is on cell culturing systems and organ on a chip structures. I have developed several platforms for cell culture integrating optical and/or electrochemical transducers for in situ culture analysis. This is one of my main research lines, now focused on the integration of advanced (bio)sensing structures able to monitor biomarkers for long time periods.
- Related to the former, I have been developing a silk technology for the processing of silk-fibroin in the Clean Room facilities of the IMB-CNM. In collaboration with Prof. Omenetto (Tufts’ University) and Prof. Jose Luis Cenis (IMIDA), we are optimizing a protocol for producing silk-based biosensors through a technology compatible with CMOS enabling mass production of biosensors using technologies of the semiconductors industry. These biosensors are very stable and durable, which may revolutionize the market of biosensors by enabling long-term monitoring.
- I have also a lot experience and skill on the production of advanced microfluidic structures capable of mixing samples, selectively retaining particles of specific size (size-exclusion filters), pumping liquids thanks to particular nanopatterning or dilute the samples at will (gradient generator).
I have been actively collaborating with the industry, being scientific advisor of three SMEs (Sensing Solutions S.L., Happy Innova and BIOO) and one large company (CASSA), where I contributed in the development of products that in their late stages of development.
I also participate in communication activities, presenting the field of microelectronics and microfabrication to bachelor and PhD students of different institution (UAB, US, UIC) or my last result in newspapers (Expansion, El Periodico de Cataluña, El Diario de Léon, etc.), general public journals such as “UAB divulga” or even TV.
I have been very active in the formation of researchers, with 5 PhD students and 4 more on-going, 10 master students and 10 bachelor students, and being responsible of two Erasmus and 2 visiting students from international institutions. I have been also mentoring 5 post-doctoral students, two of them still working with me. Two of the PhDs and two of the post-doc are international students, thus improving the visibility of the group and the center. Regarding formation, I am currently associated professor of the UAB where I am teaching from 2020, and collaborator of the UIC.
I am also associated editor of the MPDI journal “Diagnostics” and responsible of the Point-of-care section. I am member of the Scientific Committee of the IMB-CNM and evaluator of National and International (H2020) projects.
As a summary of my productivity, I have participated in 17 National Projects (8 as PI, 5 as coordinator), 2 bilateral and 7 from the European Commission (3 as PI, one as coordinator). He is co-author of +70 publications in journals such as Biosensors and Bioelectronics, Lab on a Chip or Analytical Chemistry, with +1300 citations (H-index = 23), +20 proceeding and 4 book chapters. I am co-inventor of 13 patents (2 licensed) and I have participated in +60 congresses (14 by invitation).
