Professor dr hab. Eng. Wojciech Kacalak, a graduate of the Lodz University of Technology (1970). He graduated with honors and a prize in the competition for the best student of the Lodz academic community. He received the degree of doctor of technical sciences at the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Automation at the Wrocław University of Technology in 1974. The doctoral dissertation was awarded.
He obtained the postdoctoral degree of doktor habilit. in 1978 at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the Wrocław University of Technology. The scientific achievements included in the habilitation thesis have been honored with an individual award of the Minister of Higher Education. He obtained the professor's academic title in 1989. In 1991 he was appointed as a full professor.
Vice-chairman of the Machinery Construction Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2008-2020). Member of the Central Commission for Degrees and Titles (2012-2016). Doctor honoris causa of the Poznan University of Technology - 2015, Koszalin University of Technology - 2017.
Field of scientific work of prof. dr hab. eng. Wojciech Kacalak is the technology and construction of machines. The scientific specialty is mechatronics, machine technology, in particular the optimization and automation of abrasive machining processes as well as the construction and operation of precision technological devices.
In 1993-1999 he was the rector, then (1999-2005) dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. For many years he was the chairman of the scientific council of the Research and Development Center for Machine Tools and Special Equipment in Poznań. Since 2017, he has been a member of the Scientific Council of the Air Force Institute of Technology in Warsaw.
Member of the Gesellschaft für Angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik "GAMM", a member of several dozen scientific committees of national and international conferences. He is a member of scientific councils of scientific journals, including magazines "Mechanic", "Archive of Machine Technology and Automation", "Engineering Machines".
Prof. W. Kacalak promoted 18 doctors. He is the author and co-author of over 600 scientific publications, including over 280 foreign publications in magazines and worldwide publications. He managed 16 research projects of the KBN, NCBR, NCN and many industrial projects, which is an important element of the rich achievements in the field of innovation and their applications.
Author of over 110 reviews of applications for the award of the academic title, the academic degree of doctor habilitated and doctoral degrees and the title of doctor honoris causa, including the author of reviews in foreign cables. He has prepared over 140 reviews of research projects.
Author and co-author of 125 patents and 32 subsequent patent applications. Most of the patented solutions have been used in the construction of tools, drives and gears as well as automated technological devices and used in numerous industrial implementations.
The most important scientific achievements include: development of new methods and basics of the construction of devices for automated precision grinding of hard-machined materials used in the electronics and defense industries, inter alia ceramic disturbance-resistant capacitors and piezoceramic igniters for special applications.
Further achievements include: development of the basis for optimization of grinding and smoothing processes, taking into account the probabilistic nature of processes and stochastically changing conditions of implementation, development of new abrasive tools with a layered structure with abrasive aggregates and zone-differentiated properties, theoretical and experimental foundations of design and technology of precision, backlash-free worm gears for applications in precision drives and micro engineering, methods of compensation of mechanical and thermal strains in a technological system, comprehensive characteristics of the micro-cutting process, especially the study of these processes at low temperatures (up to 78 K) and in a vacuum.
The most important implementations concern innovative technological devices, among which many generations of automatic lines for precise ceramic and piezoceramic processing, smoothing machines, grinding machines for heads and valves of internal combustion engines and innovative abrasive tools for processing light metal alloys.
Numerous distinctions include: the Gold Messe Medal in Leipzig in the field of automated technological devices, five Minister's awards for achievements in scientific activity, two Minister's awards for achievements in didactic activity, five Minister's awards for organizational achievements.
