Bio
The Sugar Metabolism team focuses on the multiple roles of soluble carbohydrates in plants during plant development and stress responses, on the discovery of novel plant carbohydrates and on the structure-function relationships of the (novel) enzymes involved in the biosynthesis and breakdown of these carbohydrates. Particular attention goes to fructans and Raffinose Family Oligosaccharides, extensions of sucrose that most likely also fulfil signalling roles. Our team has launched “Sweet Immunity” and “Sweet priming” concepts in the scientific community, and our aim is to decipher their significance not only in plants but in the whole tree of life. Besides the emerging signalling roles of small levan-type fructan oligosaccharides in microbes, plants and especially during plant microbe interactions in the context of climate change, we are eager to further explore fructan-mediated prebiotic concepts in the plant rhizosphere and phyllosphere. We predict that these effects will be equally important as those occurring in the human/animal gut system. The fundamental insights generated in our research offers tools to obtain novel carbohydrates with superior signalling and/or prebiotic effects that can be used to optimize plant microbial interactions, and by extension animal/human microbial interactions. This offers opportunities to reduce the widespread use of pesticides and antibiotics through prevention strategies with naturally occurring carbohydrates that are not harmful for the environment.
