Bio
Dr. William M. Roquemore, a member of the Senior Executive Service, is Senior Scientist for Combustion, Aerospace Systems Directorate, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. He serves as the senior research scientist and independent researcher in the field of air-breathing combustion, diagnostics and fuels technologies. He conceives, plans, and advocates major research and development activities. He consults with the director of aerospace systems, the division chiefs and the staffs concerning the total reach of the program and its results. Dr. Roquemore monitors and guides the quality of scientific and technical resources. He provides expert technical consultation to Air Force organizations, Department of Defense and other government agencies, and to universities and industry.
Dr. Roquemore joined the Aero Propulsion Laboratory in 1963 and has held various technical leadership positions in airbreathing propulsion. As Team Leader in the Fuels Branch, he pioneered the development and application of laser diagnostic techniques to study practical combustion flow. He used the techniques to establish a database for developing and evaluating combustor design models. As the Technical Director of the Combustion Branch, he led the development of a revolutionary gas turbine combustor, the trapped vortex combustor. He invented the reactive Mie scattering visualization technique. His visualizations of combustion flows have appeared on the cover of five technical publications, been presented in four books, received numerous scientific art awards, and appear in the book "Physics in the 20thCentury."
Dr. Roquemore has received patents for VTOL landing site preparation, fiber-optical thermometry and a trapped vortex combustor. He has authored or co-authored more than 200 publications on laser combustion diagnostics, and fundamental combustion and fuels.
