With more than 25 years of experience at Northwestern, Dr. Pearce’s clinical interests include general vascular surgery, peripheral vascular disease, venous problems, and aneurysms. He has been listed in Chicago Hospital News Top Physicians, Best Doctors in America, America’s Top Doctors, and Chicago Magazine’s Top Doctors.
Dr. Pearce is a dedicated educator as a professor of Vascular Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He was named the Violet R. and Charles A. Baldwin Professor of Vascular Surgery at Feinberg in 2001. He has served as program director of the Vascular Surgery Fellowship (1994-2005), as the medical director of the Vascular Laboratory (1995-2012), and as the chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery (1998-2010). He has received numerous teaching awards and was named to the NU Feinberg School of Medicine Teaching Hall of Fame in 2014. Currently, Dr. Pearce is program director of the Vascular Surgery Scientist Training Program, a program funded by NIH that is designed to train residents in the fundamentals of basic science and clinical research to increase the future pool of scientists qualified to perform research into vascular diseases.
Dr. Pearce also is an established researcher. He has distinguished himself as a clinician scientist and has been actively funded for laboratory research since 1984. In 1992 he received an NIH Academic Award in Systemic and Pulmonary Vascular Diseases, as one of a few surgeons recognized for their contributions to a better understanding of vascular diseases. Dr. Pearce has wide-ranging investigative interests, from studying basic cell and molecular mechanisms of aneurysm formation to gene and stem cell therapy of critical limb ischemia and outcome studies of interventional procedures.
Dr. Pearce has served on the editorial boards of 8 journals dedicated to vascular diseases. He has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles, 120 chapters, and 38 textbooks on vascular surgery, and has spoken before scientific communities throughout the world. He is a member of many academic societies including the American Surgical Association. He has served as president of the American Association for Vascular Surgery (2001-2002), executive editor of the national vascular website www.VascularWeb.org (2001 to-2003), and chairman of the American Vascular Association (2004-2010).
Dr. Pearce graduated from Harvard University in 1971 with honors and completed his medical education at the University of Colorado, graduating cum laude and Alpha Omega Alpha in 1975. His general surgery residency was at the University of Colorado, and he completed his Vascular Surgery fellowship at Northwestern University in 1982. He is board certified in general surgery and vascular surgery.
