As a board-certified general surgeon, Dr. Whitworth has dedicated his practice to the treatment of breast abnormalities and breast cancer. For over thirty years, Dr. Whitworth has embraced the many treatment advances and remains at the forefront of technology and surgical breakthroughs. His procedural expertise includes minimally invasive biopsy, minimally invasive breast cancer treatment, sentinel lymph node biopsy as well as oncoplastic surgery.
Additionally, he has served as Chair of the Board of Directors for the American Society of Breast Surgeons, Vice Chair of the Breast Committee for the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG), and Chair of the Research Committee for the ASBrS. Dr. Whitworth is the co-author of numerous articles on diagnosis, staging, and therapeutic options in breast cancer; his research interests include genetic testing, targeted treatments based on tumor molecular analysis, image-guided minimally invasive surgical techniques for diagnosis and management, as well as prevention of chronic lymphedema. He has served as Principal Investigator, Investigator, or Co-Investigator for numerous NCI and industry-sponsored clinical trials.
