In 1995, Canadian forest industry shipments totaled $57 billion, which exceeded both those of the motor vehicle and telecommunications equipment sectors. As companies in the forest industry face increasing international competition, they are looking to technology to improve their operations. Wes Jamroz, Division Director - Natural Resources Instrumentation at MPB, says "Without our participation in Precarn we would have faced a considerable challenge making inroads into the forestry and mining sectors. Ensuring these technologies meet with the requirements of new applications can only be done in direct collaboration with users. "
