RESEARCH AND INTERESTS
Professor Liu has been working in the field of neuroengineering, bioelectronics, invasive and non-invasive neural prosthesis, bio-signal processing, brain-machine interface, personalized learning. His recent research focuses on science and technology for 1) regaining the eyesight for the blind; 2) restoring the motor functions for the spinal cord injury; 3) recovering and enhancing the cognition for the cognition impaired; 4) developing theranostics for autonomous nervous system. He has been successful to restore useful vision for the blind with his research of retinal prosthesis. The research starts in 1988 and finally leads to successful commercial implants (code name as Argus-II) for the blind patients, receiving both CE Mark in 2011 and USA FDA market approval in 2013 (http://www.nsf.gov/news/news_summ.jsp?cntn_id=126756). Recently he has been actively collaborating with Dr. Edgerton at UCLA on the implantable technologies for the recovery of motor function for the spinal cord injury. He has demonstrated a unique capability of carrying out interdisciplinary researches from the concept conceiving of unmet medical devices to clinical trials and then receiving the USA FDA approval as a commercial device. He has received numerous awards and recognitions and has been a world leader in the field of neuroengineering.
