Dr. Wenzhe Ma received his Ph.D. degree in Pharmacology at Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2005. And shortly after that he joined Dr. Paul M. Hwang’s laboratory at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as the Postdoctoral Research Fellow. In August 2012, he started his employment with the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) as Assistant Professor. Dr. Ma studied cancer biology in both his Ph.D. and Postdoctoral research. He and his colleagues found that oxygen derived Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) causes DNA damage in vitro and tumorigenesis in vivo while mitochondrial respiration protect cells against ROS induced DNA damage. This revolutionary finding for the first time provided genetical evidence for the symbiotic theory, the important hypothesis of mitochondrial evolution in in cell biology. These findings have been published in renowned journals Nature communications, a Nature titled journal, and PLoS ONE, and presented in international meetings and received scientific awards. At MUST, Dr. Ma will focus on screening and mechanism study of natural products with anti-cancer activity as well as applications of biotechnologies in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) R&D.
