My primary research areas are focused on applied optimization and energy system economics, with special efforts in the following two directions.
Interdependent energy networks. Energy system integration has been becoming an emerging and important direction after the global upsurge in research of the smart grid. One prominent feature of the integrated energy system is the synergistic utilization of multiple energy resources, such as electricity, natural gas, heat and cooling, so as to improve the overall energy efficiency. My research is devoted to study interdependent energy networks, including optimal network energy flow, synergistic and resilient planning, operation, and control of the integrated energy system, as well as multi-lateral energy markets, using advanced optimization techniques, e.g. convex optimization, global optimization, bi-level optimization, robust optimization, and complementarity/ equilibrium programming methods.
Transportation electrification and intelligentization. The proliferation of electric vehicles and charging facilities brings remarkable interactions between the urban transportation network and power distribution network. In the presence of electric vehicles, road traffic flow impacts a certain fraction of the power system demand; the electricity price also influences route choices of electric vehicles. This fact inspires market driven possibilities to alleviate line congestion in the heavy-loaded power system and traffic jams in the stressed transportation system. My research efforts on the interdependency analysis and coordinated operation of coupled transportation and electric power networks, as well as new business modes enabled by IoT technologies, for improving the efficiency and sustainability of both infrastructures.
