Bio
Prof Lydia W, Njenga is a holder of a Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry and Associate Professor of Chemistry in Department of Chemistry; University of Nairobi having risen through academic ranks since 1983 when she first joined the Department as a Tutorial Fellow. she has eleven (11) years hands on experience at senior management level at the University of Nairobi. she has provided leadership as Director, Graduate School for four and a half (4.5) years, Director for Board of Postgraduate studies for two (2) years, and Dean School of Physical science for four (4) years.
Lydia has been a strong advocate of developing a strong graduate culture where quality and time duration is maintained. She has also served in several University, College and Faculty/School committees and was the chairperson of College of Biological and physical sciences Health and safety committee among other responsibilities. She has been an external examiner in several local and international Universities, supervised twenty one (25) postgraduate’s students, eight (7) PhD and twelve (19) Masters, and many Undergraduate to completion. She has a number of collaborators and have received several grants. The following are her research areas; fluoride analysis in water, foods, plants and soils and Coordination/Organometallic chemistry: Synthesis of macro cycles, catalytic molecules, chemotherapeutic drugs and chemo sensors and their applications. She has attended more than 40 local and international conferences and workshops and presented more than 30 papers and six reports. She is widely published, with more than 25 articles in refereed Journals and have authored two Open and Distance Learning Modules entitled, “Coordination Chemistry” and “Transition Elements (d and f block elements). Lydia has been responsible for organizing several conferences and a group leader of the Inorganic Chemistry Research Group (KEN 01). A member of various bodies: Kenya Chemical Society, African Women in Science and Engineers, Women in Chemistry, Kenya DAAD Association and East and Southern Africa Environmental Chemistry. She is also engaged in several community service initiatives especially women groups (as a leader) and mentoring young female student from high school to university.
