I perform planetary geophysics research using data from NASA spacecraft missions. Current research activities include (1) I am studying the thermal evolution and differentiation of meteorite parent bodies, with a current focus on asteroid 4 Vesta, which is the parent body of the eucrite and diogenite meteorites. (2) I am modeling the relationship between mantle convection, tidal heating, and magma production on Io. (3) I study the thermal, tectonic, and magmatic history of Venus and Mars using finite element mantle convection studies. (4) I model gravity and topography data of volcanic and tectonic structures on Venus, Mars and the Moon. In support of the gravity modeling studies, I have also made laboratory measurements of the density and porosity of lunar rocks and of martian meteorites using laser scanning and helium pycnometry.
I am a member of the science team for three upcoming NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) planetary science missions. DAVINCI is a Venus atmospheric probe that will measure the history of water and volcanism on Venus using mass spectrometry of noble gas isotopes and which will also provide detailed imaging of tessera in Alpha Regio (a Venus “continent”). This mission is expected to be launched by NASA in 2029. I am am a Co-Investigator on the Gravity and Radio Science team for the Europa Clipper mission, which will begin its study of Europa in 2030. EnVision is a joint ESA and NASA mission that will provide high resolution radar imaging and topography of Venus, along with studies of the atmosphere's chemical composition, the surface rock composition, and the deep interior structure. EnVision currently has an expected launch date in 2032. I am a Co-Investigator for the VenSAR radar team and the U. S. Mission Scientist for EnVision.
