Bio
My purpose lies in transforming lives through education and research in pursuit of social equity, the knowledge economy, and sustainable development. I lead research on leadership and governance for sustainable transformation in higher education and across various business sectors. My work focuses on sustainability and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as fuel for societal transformation and the adaptive change necessary to achieve a just transition and the creation of a world that leaves no one behind.
I have authored over 100-publications, is an academic editor and author. I am Editor-in-Chief of the international journal 'Merits' that focuses on people and work, Deputy Editor of 'International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management', and on the editorial boards of 'Leadership and Organisational Development', 'International Journal of Sustainability in Higher Education', 'Advances in Online Education' and review for a range of other high-impact journals.
My co-edited book ‘The Bloomsbury Handbook of Sustainability in Higher Education – an agenda for transformational change’ is due out in Spring 2023. I am also Series Editor for a suite of 17 books on Higher Education and the Sustainable Development Goals for Emerald Publishing.
I am a full Professor at Rutgers School of Public Health, Rutgers University and an Academic Research Scholar with Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard University. I am an experienced Leadership Coach and Mentor and a member of the Harvard McLean Institute of Coaching.
I am an Emeritus Professor (Biomedicine) and was President Vice-Chancellor of a UK university (2007-2015), taking it to the top 1% of world universities and number #1 ‘green’ UK university. I am a Visiting Professor with University College London’s Global Business School for Health, Council Member of the United Nations University, Governing Board Member of the European University EELISA, and Member of the American Association of Universities and Colleges.
I am a transformational leader able to deliver excellence in mission-driven organizations in executive and non-executive roles and through management consultancy practice and leadership coaching. Comfortable with complexity and scale, I am analytical as well as enterprising in my approach. With deep experience of the global higher education sector, I connect universities with business and society on an international scale working with national and local governments, the charity/social enterprise sector, and business – corporates, small- and medium-sized enterprise and start-ups. I support knowledge-based growth, impact and sustainability.
I was a Non-Executive Director with the UK Government’s Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and Chair of its Nominations (Talent) Committee. Expert Adviser to Sir Andrew Witty’s Review of Universities and Economic Growth and Sir Adrian Smith’s Postgraduate Review, I advise Whitehall, working with the Cabinet Office on Talent and Diversity and the Government Office for Science on Foresight. I consult on global trends in the higher education sector and the leadership challenges resulting from disruptive forces. I hold Director/Trustee roles with Charities and was Founder/Chair of the Council for Healthcare Scientists. I am a life scientist with practice in knowledge exchange and innovation, having worked with pharma/biotech. I have secured competitive research funding from UK, EU and USA sources and have experience of raising philanthropic funds. I am an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, Manufactures and Commerce.
