established. The films were prepared by chemical vapor deposition and deposited onto substrates at 745°C. Structural data were obtained primarily by X-ray precession camera techniques. Both sphalerite and wurtzite forms of ZnS are present in the films. The bulk of each film grows as an oriented mixture of these polymorphs. The wurtzite grows with its close-packed (002) parallel to the substrate surface and the sphalerite with its close-packed {111} parallel to the substrate surface. In both polymorphs a close-packed row of atoms in the close-packed plane lies close to the sapphire c axis but is tilted toward the sapphire [ 1 10]. In different samples the tilt ranges from 1.3° to 5.7°. With a cavity design which supports thermally stable Gaussian modes, no anomalous mode or spectral changes were observed under different heating or drive conditions. The magnitude of the remaining thermal effects on the microscopic lasing properties of the material are reviewed and compared.
