Bio
Rev. William (Bill) Foster – Biographical Sketch
I am a 66-year-old white, heterosexual, Euro-American married male, father and grandfather, brother and son, colleague and friend. Since 2018 I serve as Vice President of Spiritual Care for Trinity Health, a large nationally scoped, Catholic-sponsored healthcare organization, based in Michigan. Previously, I was from 2002-2015 Director of St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor hospitals and then the Regional Director of Spiritual Care for Trinity Health Southeast Michigan. I founded the ACPE Accredited Center at St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor, which today serves the Trinity Health Michigan southeast region. I was Administrative Director of Pastoral Care at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center of Toledo, Ohio from 1992 to 2002.
A board-certified chaplain in the APC since 1992, I am also a certified ACPE Educator (2010). I am an ordained minister and an endorsed chaplain and chaplain educator with the American Baptist Churches, U.S.A. I earned my B.A. in history from Wake Forest University, and my Master of Divinity in theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. I am married to the Rev. Elizabeth (Beth) Jordan Foster (retired). We have an adult son, Nick, an Army National Guard helicopter pilot, who married Christina, and who with Christina parents our grandchildren - Liam, Owen, and Audrey. And we have an adult daughter, Hannah, an unmarried software engineer.
A son of the American South, I began professional ministry between college and seminary as a short-term missionary to Okinawa, Japan. From that experience, I expected to pursue a career in foreign missions. Having grown up in two family businesses, choosing ministry seemingly marked a significantly different career path for me from that of my family. As the first minister in my family, I recognize the influence of my mother, a special education teacher, toward a caring and teaching profession.
I sought a career context in which I could express my calling to ministry and my gifts in teaching and management. I also sought a ministry that valued inclusivity within a widely diverse context. It seemed providential to encounter CPE at Baylor University Medical Center during seminary and discover there a rich context for multi-cultural ministry. My chaplaincy career evolved into management and then into clinical education, intersecting with formative elements in my family background.
I self-identify as a minister, a manager, and a mentor. I am dedicated to raising the professional standing of chaplaincy. In my current role, I designed and implemented an organizational structure based on the board certification of chaplains, managed by BCC chaplains. In this structure, some 250-plus chaplains across 22 states report to 20 managers, who each report to one of 3 system level directors, who each report to me. Because I believe a continuous learning culture drives quality service, each of our 4 ACPE Centers place students regionally in acute and non-acute care sites with chaplain preceptors. We promote evidence-based best practice, research literacy and participation, and interprofessional practice. A fully integrated ACPE and APC will foster these shared professional aims.
