个人简介
I am a synthetic chemist with interests in glycoscience and synthetic biology. I graduated with a BSc in Chemistry from the University of St Andrews in 1995, where I also started my research career in glycoscience during my PhD working with Professor Rob Field, graduating in 1999. I was awarded a Wellcome Trust International Prize Travelling Research Fellowship (IPTRF) to work on mulitivalent glycans with Professor Sir Fraser Stoddart FRS at UCLA. I then joined the lab of Professor Steve Homans, School of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Leeds in 2001 on the return leg of my IPTRF. There, I gained expertise in biophysical methods to complement my previous training in synthetic chemistry. In 2004 I moved across campus to the School of Chemistry as a lecturer and research fellow before being awarded a Royal Society University Research Fellowship in 2005. During this time I developed a broad research programme in the use of chemical and enzymatic methods to make and modify carbohydrates and proteins for use in targeted delivery and synthetic biology. I was awarded the Royal Society of Chemistry Dextra Carbohydrate Chemistry Award in 2013 and I have been Professor of Biomolecular Chemistry since 2016. I have supervised 20 PhD students and I am a co-director of the Wellcome Trust PhD scheme at the University of Leeds, where I am also programme manager for our MSc in Chemical Biology and Drug Design. My research has always been collaborative, both through my membership of the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology at University of Leeds and also through a series of European and UK research networks. I chaired an EU COST Action network (CM1102 MultiGlycoNano; 2011-15) that brought together over 60 research groups from 21 countries to pursue interdisciplinary projects in ‘multivalent glycosystems for nanoscience’. Through leading this COST Action, I oversaw the organisation of 5 international conferences and 3 international postgraduate training schools. I have regularly taught calorimetry methods at postgraduate training schools in the Netherlands, France and Czech Republic. I also coordinated an ERASynBio consortium (2014-17) with the aim to establish the emerging field of Synthetic Glycobiology - a concept that was the focus of a recent Royal Society conference (2018) that I co-chaired, and continues to be developed through a Marie Sklodowska Curie Initial Training Network (synBIOcarb 2018-2022) that I am coordinating. As an active member of the UK glycoscience community I was Chair of the RSC Carbohydrate Interest Group (2016-17); a member of the steering group for the IBCarb BBSRC Network in Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy (2014-18); and I represent the UK on the European Carbohydrate Organisation. My interests in glycan synthesis is currently focused on the use of enzymes to make analogues of biomedically-important oligosaccharides for diagnostic devices as part of a BBSRC collaboration involving 8 UK universities and 5 companies, and the synBIOcarb ITN involving 8 organisations in 6 countries.
