Bio
Volker Schulz-von der Gathen received the Dr. rer. nat. degree from the University of Duisburg-Essen, Essen, Germany, in 1990 for the investigation of an arc discharge by the use of advanced optical diagnostics.
He was a Senior Scientist with the Institute of Laser and Plasma Physics, Essen, until he moved to the Department of Application-Oriented Plasma Physics, Ruhr-University Bochum, Bochum, Germany, in 2005, where he, as a Principal Investigator with the Research Department “Plasmas with Complex Interactions,” is currently Project Leader with the Research Unit FOR1123 “Physics of Microplasmas,” concentrating on the diagnostics of microdischarges close to atmospheric pressure. in particular, his group is investigating RF-excited atmospheric-pressure microjet and microplasma arrays operated at kilohertz frequencies. His main research interest is the investigation of low-temperature nonequilibrium plasmas by optical methods as phase resolved optical emission spectroscopy or two-photon absorption laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy.
Dr. Schulz-von der Gathen is a member of the German Physical Society (DPG).
